Quick Look – Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG20 (Review)

This thing rocks!

After my fiasco with the Zoom Q3HD. I was on the look out for a small HD camcorder that shot full 1080 HD video. I was turned off of the “blogging” type camcorders and really didn’t want a full fledged camcorder either (At least not yet).

A friend offered to let me try her Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG20 camcorder. I had seen one of her videos and was impressed with the quality, even in low light.

The first thing I noticed was its design and size. It’s pretty easy to carry and even easier to shoot with. The camera layout and menus are easy to use. The pistol grip type shooting is quite intuitive and the swivel LCD screen makes shooting blog posts very easy.

What impressed me the most was the video quality.  For an inexpensive camera/camcorder the video is excellent. Does it rival expensive camcorders? No. Does it shoot better quality than those “blogging” type cameras? Yes! And it even has a real zoom lens. None of that digital zoom crap that is the only option on those “blogging” type cameras. This camera does have a digital zoom option but you don’t need it with the optical zoom.

The sound isn’t that great on this camera, but it is ok. To me it doesn’t matter since I will be recording audio to my Zoom H2 anyway.

Conclusion: I want one! The Xacti VPC-CG20 is about $160 USD right now! At that price you can afford to buy the camera and a Zoom H1 audio recorder kit. Giving you great audio and video.
