The audio quality in your videos is just as important as the video quality. One of the best ways to improve your audio quality is with a good lavalier microphone. And, the best part is, they are not that expensive. Seriously. The audio-technica ATR3350 lavalier microphone is under $25. Plug it in to your camera’s mic jack and you’re ready to go. The audio quality of the lav mic is far superior to the mic in the camera (as you will hear in the video below).
The only issue with this mic is it only records in mono, or just the left audio channel in your camera. There are a couple of easy fixes for this in post production (editing). The easiest is to just output your video in mono and then you will have the same audio coming out of both speakers. The other method is to copy the audio into both left and right channels when editing. The choice is yours. There are probably other methods to correct the one channel audio issue. If you have a simple solution, post it in the comments below.
The video below lets you hear the audio quality difference of the built in mic in the Canon 7D and the audio-technica ATR3350 lav mic. The editing process I used was to edit the video together in iMovie 11 (I highly recommend iLife 11 for Mac users) and output the final video’s audio in mono. Check out the video below and let me know what you think. If you have any other suggestions please post those as well.
