Shooting family portraits outside can be challenging. I worked an entire ski season shooting portraits on Whistler Blackcomb and I learned one simple trick to improve the portraits I took of the clients. If it’s a sunny day, turn on your flash. It’s that simple. This is the quickest and easiest way to improve your outdoor family portraits. What the flash does, is it balances the exposure of your subject to the bright background. Your family members are no longer overpowered by the brightness in the background and you get better photos.
This technique does not work so well on cloudy days and if its raining or snowing. Try it out and let us see the results by posting a link in the comments.
