I’m starting a new feature this week called “The Friday Five.” What is it? You might ask. Simply put, it is a list of 5 sites or articles I found interesting from the past week.
So here we go!
- David at Strobist runs a great blog about off camera flash tips and techniques. This week he posted an article about syncing a Canon G9
at shutter speeds as high as 1/2500th of a second. The reason I liked the article is because the Canon G9
is my “carry around everywhere” camera and it is also the camera I use to film my video posts. Here is the link to the article.
- Chase Jarvis’ recent post about his travels to Dubai caught my eye because of a stunning image of the cities skyline poking out above the clouds. You have to see this.
- Cara Phillips has written a wonderful article about “being a photographer.” Anyone interested in making a career as a photographer, or who already is a “professional” photographer needs to read this.
- Scott Kelby’s post on his blog about the success of his The Digital Photography Book, Volume 1
becoming the best selling digital photography book ever is quite amazing. And that The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
is out selling volume 1 for the same time period is even more impressive. Good luck with the books Scott.
- Check out Photoshelter’s blog post about the National Magazine Awards. Some great images.

Yeah I’ve looking at getting a G9 for a long time, I’m afraid if I wait any longer I’ll be pinning the G10.
The G9 is a wonderful camera. I have mine ready to go all the time. I have taken it on day long backcountry ski tours. The photos and videos from that thing are fabulous. I use it to create my video posts (still working on getting better at that). I even did a quick 5 min. shoot with it for a client, and they were ecstatic with the results. I even plan on taking the camera mountain biking (we’ll see how it survives that kind of abuse – I crash quite a bit).
I tell people, “The longer you wait to get a camera, the less time you have to use that camera.” In other words, stop waiting and start shooting!
I already have a D80, so this would be my third body (well second, as I would replace my much older 2.1MP P&S). For the times when carrying a larger DSLR is not practical.
Don’t tell anyone, but I’m switching to Nikon in the next few weeks (D300) from Canon. I’m keeping the G9, but the Canon 10D is heading out the door!
D300 is a nice choice, I have used the D200 and it is a great camera. The D80 is basically the D200 with a few added digi-programs and a loss of Lens Metering on older lenses. Which is a bit of a bummer as I shot with quite a few older primes which do not have current day options, but the D200 at the time was way to pricey.
